The article introduces the description of the problem of air exchange at opencast mining works. Equations are introduced
to calculate open pit atmosphere lability energy shortage. The description of a new energy saving method of preventing
and controlling internal open pit thermal inversions is introduced; the method is carried out by means of piping fresh air
warmed up in the pipes of a heat-transfer device immersed into the river. The calculation of technical parameters of
ventilation system realizing this method is fulfilled according to the developed principles. It is shown that at the initial stage
of inversion development in the open pit of Gorevsky GOK in order to make up for the shortage of heat not more than
within 24 hours it is required to use one (under the depth of an open pit H < 300 m) – three (under H > 390 m) of ventilation
installations with individual capacity 100 m3/sec.

Key words: air exchange; dust and gas; thermal inversion; atmosphere lability energy shortage; emergency downtime
of an open pit; aerodynamic connection; pipeline ventilation systems; heat exchange pipes; mass flow rate; density and
static pressure.
